Sportswear Fabric Guide: Choosing the Right Performance Textile

Feb 10, 2025 · 1 min read · By Finazir

Fabric is where performance apparel is won or lost. Understanding a few core textiles and the meaning of GSM lets you specify products that feel premium and perform as promised.

Polyester

The workhorse of performance wear: lightweight, durable, quick-drying and the ideal substrate for sublimation printing. Great for jerseys, training tees and shorts.

Nylon

Softer and more abrasion-resistant than polyester, with a premium hand-feel. Blended with spandex it creates the buttery, squat-proof fabric used in leggings.

Spandex (Elastane)

Added in small percentages for stretch and recovery. A 5–20% spandex content delivers the four-way stretch athletes expect.

Cotton Blends

Cotton-poly blends balance softness and durability for hoodies, sweatshirts and lifestyle tees.

Understanding GSM

GSM (grams per square metre) measures fabric weight. Lightweight training tees sit around 140–160 GSM; premium hoodies run 300–400 GSM. Specifying GSM is the clearest way to control quality and cost.

Specify With Confidence

Tell your manufacturer the fabric composition, GSM and stretch you need — or describe the feel and end use, and a good partner like Finazir will recommend the right textile.
